Its name refers to Den Rock, a massive granite rock formation that’s a popular spot for rock climbers. In 1877, the park was purchased as a cemetery. It was rezoned as a park in 1896 and improved by Civilian Conservation Corps workers. In the 1930s, they added two amphitheathers, rock steps, a boardwalk, and numerous trails to the park. In 1995, the city rezoned the park from industrial to residential, creating additional protected open space on the west edge of the park. In summer 2003, the Student Conservation Association constructed a stone pathway through the park.

The park was once sacred to the Shawsheen Valley’s Indigenous people. Located in the Nasoba Traverse, it is home to several ancient volcanic rock formations and minerals.
